Precious moments in my Seattle newborn photography studio are always spent with the sweetest little bundles. With 10 fingers and 10 toes, and the most adorable newborn lashes you will ever see, little Zinnia was the latest visitor. I have to admit, we had so much fun imagining and creating her session. In fact, here’s a fun little tidbit of information for you! If you didn’t already know, the Zinnia was the first plant to flower in space on the International Space Station.
When her mom booked Zinnia’s session, I knew we had to do something truly special to honor this little one’s namesake. So, I worked on a one-of-a-kind image, just for Zinnia. It depicts her sweetly slumbering away in the window of a rocket. With Earth far off in the distance and a blooming flower beside her, Zinnia was off on her first big adventure.

From space, back down to Earth, we still had plenty more to do with Zinnia. There was much to be done, and no time to waste. When she returned from the outer reaches of space, little Zinnia was off to the sea. Surrounded by rare pearls, ornate seashells, and the turquoise blue of the ‘ocean’, Zinnia was a little mermaid. All swaddled in blue, sweet little Zinnia slept peacefully as she transformed, just for a moment, into a fairytale creature of the sea.
As much fun as we had conceptualizing and capturing these fun, expressive images for Zinnia, I never forgo the opportunity to work on classic portraits. The simplistic beauty of capturing a newborn with classic poses allows me to focus in on the details that make up their being. The tiny fingers, the full head of hair, the little creases in their arms, and their silky little eyes.
The joy of childhood is seen through the imagination and in the possibilities of what is to come. It’s such a huge contributing factor to what I do, and how I create artistic imagery for my tiniest clients. When a family is in the throes of the newborn stage; sleepless nights and diaper bags, I know the days can seem long. But in truth, they are fleeting. Every moment is precious and every minute that ticks by is one step further into their growth and the development of their personality. It’s a time you will never forget, and one worthy of creating heirloom-quality photos to display in your home.
