Portland Newborn Photographer

As a Portland newborn photographer, I was overjoyed to work with this sweet family! They recently welcomed the tiniest girl, who was just 6 adorable pounds of love. All of the holiday-themed images featured below were custom one-of-a-kind pieces created at the family’s request. Her family also had a few other special images in mind for her session. Mom wanted to incorporate her wedding flowers into the shoot, and grandma pictured a one-of-a-kind equestrian-themed image that included a saddle. We pulled off both of these photos and so much more, and you’ll get to see each and every one. If you’re curious about working with a Portland newborn photographer, I’m detailing everything you need to know about your session, through some commonly asked questions, which I’ve answered below.

How soon should I schedule newborn photos?

You should reach out to your Portland newborn photographer around the start of your third trimester. This will give us time to open the line of communication before baby arrives. We cannot control when baby makes their appearance into the world. But, we can discuss the best time to schedule their newborn photos when they do, which is ‘typically’ around 5 days to 2 weeks old. This will also give us time to discuss the vision you have in mind for their photos. Including theming, poses, wraps & swaddles, and any one-of-a-kind backgrounds you’re dreaming of.

Why should I hire a newborn photographer?

It has become commonplace for hospitals to offer newborn photography. However, this is not always the most ideal situation for newborn portraits. Doctors, nurses, and visitors will be in and out of your room during your stay. The entire experience of birthing will feel like an absolute whirlwind. It’s also not uncommon that during those first few days, baby may be swollen and you are not exactly feeling your best. So many of my moms and dads love taking part in newborn photos. Doing this in a hospital setting, with medical equipment, machines, and hospital bracelets is not always the most ideal situation.

Should parents be in newborn photos?

Parents are always welcome to step in front of the camera while working with me as their Portland newborn photographer. It’s an amazing opportunity to slow things down, just for a moment, and enjoy the awe and happiness of welcoming this sweet baby into your hearts. It’s not a requirement that parents join a session, but I do recommend at least 3 simplified poses if you are considering stepping in front of the camera. One of mom and baby, one of dad and baby, and one of everyone together.

Oftentimes, when a family includes older siblings, they are also welcome to join in on the fun! This special time of welcoming a new baby is a moment to be savored and enjoyed by all. I have also worked with grandparents, and even aunts and uncles during a session! During a baby’s first year, there are so many big changes. Not only will they be sitting up, walking, and working on becoming a big kid, but their appearance from that newborn stage will change significantly. In hindsight, it will feel like a fleeting moment. But capturing this beautiful time will allow your memories to flourish, and provide you with adorable photos to look back on for a lifetime.

In-home newborn photography

I understand the uncertainty and concerns of taking your newborn to a photography studio. You want your baby to be in the safest environment possible. In addition to that, I also want my families to enjoy every moment of this experience. It’s hard to do that when you are toting a heavy diaper bag or worried about interrupting a feeding or sleeping schedule. Recently, I have started offering in-home newborn photography. This allows me to bring the ‘studio to you’ and for us to work at a pace that makes the most sense for you and your family. If you’re curious to know how in-home newborn photography differs from studio photography, I’ll let you in on a little secret. All of the photos features in this post were taken in home! Your home doesn’t have to be grand in size to accomplish this either. I can work magic in nearly any size home.

How should I position my baby for newborn photos?

Leave that to me! After over two decades of working as a Portland newborn photographer, I’ve developed a skilled hand at posing and positioning your sweet baby for the cutest photos possible. I will also swaddle them in the assortment of wraps we discussed and make sure that adorable bow, bonnet, or accessory is perfectly positioned for every click of the camera.
