Newborn Photography Olympia WA-What to Wear for Sibling Portraits

There is nothing sweeter than a picture of the newest member of the family with his or her siblings, but we are often asked “What do they all wear for their pictures when they are all together? What does the baby wear? How do you coordinate what the baby is going to wear with what the sibling(s) are going to wear?”

The first rule of thumb about newborn photography or sibling photography is to keep it simple, we want the eye to be drawn to the baby and by keeping the clothing simple the eye is drawn to all the sweet faces. Clothing that is busier tends to make the photograph “busier” and can distract the eye from the main purpose of the picture; your new little baby. The best things for siblings to wear is something that is going to compliment and coordinate with what baby is wearing. White shirts and jeans are perfect for a sibling photograph. In the picture below, the baby has a long sleeved white onesie which goes great with her sisters and brother’s white shirts. She is also wearing a denim diaper cover {we supplied the diaper cover} to coordinate with their jeans. The pink flower headbands were the perfect touch that the mom of these four beautiful children brought in. A pop of color is wonderful and adds a pretty flair to a photograph when everyone is wearing clothing in similar tones and textures. I also love the fact that the girls’ jeans are embellished with heart patches on one and embroidered flowers on the other, that gives the portrait a fun personality!

Feet, let’s talk about feet for a sec. Barefeet are so cute and very practical when it comes to a portrait of children holding a baby. First, baby will not be wearing any shoes, so having everyone wear no shoes makes a more cohesive look for your portrait. Second, it hurts to sit criss-cross-applesauce with shoes on while holding a baby in your lap! Ouch!
