You’ve just seen some hilarious and precious birthday party cake smash photos and you can’t wait to make it happen. The idea of your little one smooshing that festive frosting between their chubby little fingers and the look of awe and surprise at that first lick of magically sweet frosting is something you want to capture and cherish forever.
And then it happens. You put the cake in front of your little angel and he or she erupts into tears because the cake is scary. Or, they don’t like the texture. Or they don’t like the taste of the icing. They ignore the cake, or accidentally knock it over or fling it defiantly to the floor because they really just wanted some cheerios. Believe it or not, 80% of babies won’t touch or eat the cake. They may eye it suspiciously, poke one finger into it or turn their noses up at it all together.
It’s always a good idea to check your expectations when it comes to portrait sessions like this. Babies have a mind of their own, and even though you may be certain your child is going to be thrilled at the prospect of diving head-first into a mountain of icing, the reality is it just might not go the way you planned.
The good news is that no matter how your little one takes to the cake, the session will be adorable, memorable and successful — and full of surprises! Here are some tips to help things along:
If you want to get a better idea of how your child will respond to a cake smash session, do a practice run at home with a small cake. Place your baby on the floor with the cake, not in their high chair because that is how they will be during their photo session. This will let you know where your baby stands on cake, and also lets you familiarize them with this new substance so they don’t get as overwhelmed later.
Bring a few of your baby’s favorite snacks such as cheerios or puffs with you so they can be placed on the cake.
Relax and enjoy the session — the photos will be awesome no matter what!
