Cake Smash Photography Ballard WA | ‘C’ is for Cookie!

Previously, on the blog, I shared a fun baking theme setup I just got in the studio for my birthday babies. This week, there’s a brand new cookies & milk theme. In fact, this cake smash photography setup might just remind you of your favorite friendly monster. You know him! He’s blue and loves cookies so much that he even made up his own song. After all, “‘C is for cookie, that’s good enough for me”!

Birthday boy Jozy is the very first baby to have a cookie-crumbling good time in the studio. To create this setup, I displayed some cute, rustic milk crates in the backdrop to hold jars upon jars chock full of cookies. There were cream sandwich cookies and more chocolate cookies than I could count! You just can’t have cookies without milk. So, of course, I also added in some classic glass milk jugs. The whole theme was tied together with royal blue accents, including a fun googly-eyed banner. All in honor of our furry blue friend who lives on Sesame Street!

I say this so often, but it’s true. You never know how a baby will react to the cake during cake smash photography. Some babies are a bit reserved, and only dig in with one or two fingers, or not at all. And some babies are ready to dive in with their fingers & toes! I bring this up because as parents, I’m sure you are envisioning what your baby’s cake smash will look like. You might be hoping for a messy good time complete with frosting-coated smiles. But it’s important not to create an expectation in advance. I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve to get baby curious & excited about cake, while snapping gorgeous photos with the backdrop you’ve selected. But how they react to the cake is never a guarantee.

I always encourage Moms and Dads to bring along their baby’s favorite snack. For example, does your little one love Cheerios or yogurt puffs? We can stick them to the back of the cake, hidden away from the camera. This will encourage baby to reach out to the cake to grab a bite of their favorite snack. Which will make it appear as if they are digging right in! However, some babies are a bit more curious in nature. They need time to assess things in their own unique way. If baby needs time, the most important thing is not to force them. They can play with a wooden spoon while I click beautiful birthday photos for you to remember for a lifetime. When the session is done, you can take the cake home for the whole family to enjoy!

First Birthday Photography Ideas

You might be wondering which category little Jozy fell into for his cake smash photography in Ballard WA. Well, he was a brave and artistic adventurer. He enjoyed baby bites of chocolate chip cookies and delicious fingerfulls of blue frosting. When he was sure he had tasted enough, it was playtime! He finger-painted using the blue frosting from his cake! It was so cute to see how much fun he had, and I snapped every single moment.

But, let’s back up for a minute. Before the cake came out and before we sang ‘C is for cookie’ and Happy Birthday – we created a one-of-a-kind image for Jozy and his family. Jozy’s parents wanted his first birthday portraits to be a reflection of their culture & heritage. Fairies and Frogs is all about celebrating families. So I always highly encourage my clients to bring along anything they’d like to add to their baby’s session. Whether it’s an outfit or treasured items from home.

For sweet little Jozy, his family brought along his very own tot-sized Isiagu. The Isiagu is a traditional, celebratory outfit worn by the Igbo people of Nigeria. It is covered in a vibrant print of lion heads. To see tiny little Jozy honor his family’s heritage by wearing an Isiagu, was such a beautiful experience. In fact, I even worked with Jozy’s family to create a one-of-a-kind image, which we called the Lion Prince! You’ll get to see this snap, and all his cookie-crumbling fun, when you scroll through the photos below.
