As a Bellevue family photographer, I capture it all. From beautiful expecting mamas to sweet and cuddly newborns, to babies who have discovered the joy of sitting up on their own, and first-birthday boys and girls who experience their first bite of cake! Sweet little Dominic is celebrating his very first birthday. So naturally, we had a fun celebration with him in front of the camera. The theme was ‘fall in the PNW’ and this little guy was full of beaming smiles and baby giggles!

In fact, when Dominic’s loving mama scheduled his first birthday session, she asked if we could create a custom one-of-a-kind image, in honor of her birthday boy. With our fall theme already decided, all we had left to do was add a few flourishes and elements to bring everything to life. Of course, my very first thought was pumpkins! It’s impossible to have a fall celebration without them. But Dominic’s one-of-a-kind scene also needed a little of that effervescent fall glow that we know and love. Something to represent that time when the leaves turn and the sun is peaking through the tops of the trees. For that, I added some glowing lanterns. With his zipper vest on and his fall booties fastened, Dominic was ready to create some glowing fall magic.

One area I always break out the creativity for with my birthday boys and girls is through their cake smash setup. Moms and Dads are free to pick the setup and theme of their choice, and their choices are always awe-inspiring. In keeping with our overall feeling of fall, we added a heavy dose of the PNW to Dominic’s cake smash! I kept the tones deep, warm, and earthy and added in elements like oversized pinecones, tree bark, and arrowheads. Dominic’s adorable little rust orange romper was the perfect outfit for our setup!

There was just one thing left to add, his cake! Mimicking the tree bark and warm woodsy tones, I had a cake made that would fit right into Dominic’s celebration. I have to tell you, this beyond adorable birthday boy was so ready to dig into his first birthday cake! Fingers, toes, knees, and everything in between, Dominic dived right in and had tons of fun in the process. He was not shy one bit, and it was such a joy to capture every moment of him enjoying his very first taste of cake and frosting!

In addition to his custom one-of-a-kind photo and fall-themed PNW birthday cake smash, I also worked with Dominic on classic photos and a rubber ducky-themed ‘bubble bath’! This little sweetie had a smile for me each and every step of the way. However, there was one rare instance where he became as serious as anything. And boy oh boy did his tiny little serious face have me laughing! You can see every moment I captured as a Bellevue family photographer, through the images below.
