One of the most common questions I hear as an Olympia newborn photographer is:
“What if my baby won’t sleep during their newborn session?”
It is such a common concern that I can almost guarantee most parents worry about it before they walk through my studio doors.
The good news?
You do not need to stress.
After photographing newborns for many years, I can confidently say that babies do not read the schedule, follow the rules, or always do what we expect and that is completely okay.

“My Baby Doesn’t Like Being Swaddled”
This is another concern I hear frequently.
Parents often tell me:
“My baby hates being swaddled.”
What many parents don’t realize is that professional newborn swaddling is very different from the swaddles typically used at home.
Newborns spent months safely tucked inside the womb. A properly wrapped newborn swaddle recreates that feeling of comfort and security. In fact, many babies who seem to dislike swaddling at home settle beautifully in the studio.
I use gentle, secure swaddling techniques specifically designed for newborn photography, and it is amazing how often parents are surprised when their baby completely relaxes.
For many babies, swaddling becomes the first step toward helping them drift off to sleep.
Do All Babies Fall Asleep?
Most do.
Some fall asleep immediately.
Some need a little extra time.
Some want a feeding break first.
Some want to look around and see what is happening before settling down.
Every baby is different.
Newborn sessions are intentionally designed to be flexible and baby-led. There is no pressure for your baby to perform, and there is no timer counting down while your little one decides whether they are ready for a nap.
If a baby needs extra cuddles, feeding breaks, or soothing time, we simply take the time they need.

What If My Baby Stays Awake?
Then we create beautiful awake portraits.
Some of my favorite newborn images have been created with bright-eyed babies who were completely fascinated by the world around them.
Tiny expressions.
Curious gazes.
Wide newborn eyes.
These moments are just as precious as sleepy newborn photographs.
In fact, many parents love receiving a combination of both awake and asleep images because they capture different parts of their baby’s personality.
If your baby stays awake at the beginning of the session, we simply work with that and create gorgeous images while we wait for sleep to arrive naturally.
Newborn Sessions Are Designed Around Your Baby
One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography is that babies must cooperate perfectly.
They do not.
A professional newborn session is designed around your baby—not the other way around.
That means:
- Feeding breaks are expected
- Diaper changes are expected
- Extra cuddles are expected
- Awake moments are expected
- Sleepy moments are welcomed when they happen
Every session unfolds differently, and that is part of what makes newborn photography so special.
Why Timing Still Matters
While I photograph babies of many ages, newborns are generally easiest to pose and settle during the first few weeks of life.
Because of this, many parents choose to schedule their newborn session within the first 1–3 weeks after birth.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if my baby won’t sleep during their newborn session?
Don’t worry! While most babies eventually fall asleep during their session, every baby is different. If your little one stays awake for a while, we’ll capture beautiful awake portraits before they drift off to sleep naturally.
My baby doesn’t like being swaddled. Can we still do a newborn session?
Absolutely. Many parents tell me their baby dislikes swaddling, but professional newborn swaddling is very different from what is typically done at home. Most babies settle beautifully once they are wrapped securely and comfortably, and many even fall asleep shortly afterward.
Can you photograph awake newborns?
Yes! Awake newborn images can be incredibly special. Those tiny expressions, curious eyes, and sweet newborn features often create some of the most memorable photographs from a session.
How long does a newborn session take?
Every baby is unique, so session times vary. Newborn sessions are designed to be relaxed and baby-led, allowing time for feeding, soothing, cuddling, and diaper changes whenever needed.
When should I schedule my newborn session?
Most families reserve their newborn session during pregnancy. I pencil you in based on your due date and then schedule the exact session date once your baby arrives.
What should I bring to my newborn session?
The most important thing is your baby! I provide the props, wraps, blankets, and styling. Parents can simply relax and enjoy the experience while I guide the session.
Trust the Process
If you are worried your baby won’t sleep, please know that you are not alone.
Almost every parent who enters my studio has the same concern.
And almost every parent leaves saying:
“I can’t believe how well that went.”
Whether your baby falls asleep immediately, takes a little extra time, or decides to give us a few adorable awake expressions first, beautiful images are absolutely possible.
My job is to create a calm, relaxed experience and guide the session every step of the way so that you can sit back, relax, and enjoy these fleeting first days.
